Happiness is Pets: Preparing the Home for a Puppy
Are you purchasing a puppy from Happiness is Pets? If so, you need to prepare your home for the brand new puppy arriving in your life. Puppies make excellent friends and wonderful soul mates as well. But when a new puppy is brought home the house needs to be safe.
The first thing that should be done is all of the cabinets should have child safety locks on them to prevent the puppy from accessing cleaning supplies and other chemicals. If you don’t want the puppy to wander around the house, erect gates in hallways and doorways to keep the puppy from wandering. Happiness is Pets is a great place to look for puppy supplies.
The next thing that should be done is to purchase some toys for the puppy and a new bed or crate to sleep in. Happiness is Pets is a great place to look for that new puppy that will add love to your home.

Happiness is Pets: Free Vet Exam
Why does Happiness is Pets offer a free examine from a licensed veterinarian with each puppy sold? Because even though they get their puppies from quality breeders, they want to make absolutely sure that every puppy they sell is healthy and happy. It is the policy of Happiness is Pets to have each pup examined before they are sold. Then it is the option of the owner to take the puppy for a free vet exam. Every puppy buyer has 7 days from the date of purchase to bring their pup to one of our approved veterinarians.

Happiness Is Pets : Crate Training
Puppies who aren’t housebroken or who do damage inside the home are puppies who are likely to be looking for a new home. If you get a new puppy you must housebreak and train your canine friend.
One of the best ways to housebreak and new puppy and to get that puppy out of trouble is to use a crate to confine and protect the pup.
Many people think that it is “cruel” to put a puppy in a cage. Actually dogs are den dwelling animals and most of them actually enjoy being in a crate. Of course, you need to be reasonable. If you keep the pup in a crate when you are away at work. Don’t also keep him in the cage when you are home and can keep an eye on him. The crate is a teaching tool. Once the pup is housebroken and you are convinced that he won’t chew furniture or shoes, you can curtail its use.
You can buy a Fiberglas or wire crate that can be kept in any room in the house. It should be barely large enough for the pup to lie down comfortably. If your pup is one of the large breeds and you don’t want to buy several crates as he grows, buy an adult-size crate and partition it so it fits his current size.
The crate is a multi-purpose piece of dog paraphernelia. It can be used for:
Housetraining
Simply take the pup outside after each nap or meal. Do not play with him until he has done his business. If he hasn’t relieved himself in about 10 minutes, take him back inside and put him in the crate. Repeat the routine in 10-15 minutes. Remember, no play until the pup does hid business and lots of praise when he gets the idea.
Protection from excited toddlers.
Children need to learn that the pup needs some quiet time. A blanket over a wire crate will help a child understand that it’s time for your pup to rest.
Playpen for puppies when you’re not home.
If you need to take the kids to school or go to the grocery store, the pup that’s crated will not chew the furniture or wet the carpet while you’re gone. If he has already wet the carpet or chewed the furnitue, you can put him in the crate and issue a stern warning that there’ll be no more of that going on.
Sanctuary for the over-excited pup.
Don’t let your puppy run amok through the house, causing trouble and disruptions. And please don’t feel guilty about restricting his freedom. Sending the pup to his crate is somewhat akin to sending a child to his room: he feels comfortable there and he knows you are angry, and you have a chance to recover from his outburst.

Happiness is Pets: Getting Ready for Your Puppy
Puppies are great. But they require a lot of time and attention. A new puppy is a responsibility and preparing for a new puppy means planning in advance.
Let’s talk first about supplies. Here is a partial list of what you will need.
Puppy Supplies
Food: Decide on a well balanced, nutritious puppy food and stick to it. We recommend Royal Canin Natural Blend.
- Food dish (Weighted and non-slip)
- Water dish (Weighted and non-slip)
- Leash (Consider the size of your dog. Puppies that are toy and small breeds should have lighter weight leashes than larger breeds. For safety, leashes should be well-made and strong enough for your dog.)
- Training collar (Standard and large breeds need a smooth metal link training collar. Toy and very small breeds or dogs with delicate necks should have a nylon collar rather than a metal one.
- Regular Collar A regular collar is important and should provide a place for your dog’s ID information–even though your pup has a microchip.
Sleeping area with bedding
Teething toys. (Puppies are teething until six months of age. Be sure you help your puppy soothe those sore gums with a reusable Fill-‘N-Freeze Bone or simply rinse wash cloths in cold water, wring out the excess and place the twisted rags in your freezer. When your pup needs some relief, give him a frozen washcloth. When the cloth your puppy is chewing has thawed, take it away from the dog so he cannot chew and eat it. Ice cubes are another possibility.Toys. Vary the toys that you have for your pup. There are doggy educational toys, challenging toys that hide special treats and secrets, safe chews and toys that cannot be pulled apart easily. Dogs get bored just like people, so offer a variety of toys.
